Experience of a diabetic mom

Well, I've been feeling down and depressed after being diagnosed as having gestational diabetes. Life seemed to crash down on me when I was told to have exceptional blood sugar level after downing the glucose drink. I have to restrict my diet and being a glutton, it ain't easy like 1-2-3. I used to gloat to hubby that my pregnancy seemed to be in a breeze till I received this news. I cry myself to sleep every night and teary-eyed during day time worrying whether little princess inside me is normal and growing healthily as having diabetes during pregnancy could increase the risk of baby having heart complications and brain abnormality. This is the last thing I can accept. I got withdrawn, not wanting to communicate with my little princess coz everytime I think about it, tears would just automatically rolled down.

Yesterday was the first day to start my blood glucose monitoring. I have to prick myself 7 times a day for 3 days on 23 Aug, 25 Aug and 27 Aug (what a day to choose as it's my b'day too). Each day, I have to prick once right before every meal and 2 hours after every meal and then once more before bedtime. It wasn't such a bad experience afterall after I got over my fear of needles.

I failed the first reading, recording 5.7 when it should have been between 4.5 - 5.5 mmol/L. It could have been the two mouthful of milk & cornflakes that I ate the previous night before bedtime. 2 hours after breakfast, my reading remains at 5.7, withing the range of 5.5-6.6mmol/L after meals. Failed my reading before lunch again at 5.8 and faired even worse after 2 hours at 8.1. Dinner readings were just alright at 5.1 and 6.6 pre & post meal. Failed bedtime reading at 6.4.

I don't need to have my blood glucose monitored today but I totally cut down on carbs which means completely no rice or beehoon. I had oatmeal porridge for breakfast, fish soup with lots of vege + green apple for lunch and fish, soup with fresh shitake mushrooms, carrot & tofu + boiled green vegetables. In between, I had a few Meiji plain oat biscuits dip in a little bit of low-fat cheese plus Nutrisoy soyamilk without sugar. I took my readings voluntarily at dinner time and I passed beautifully.
Through some trial and error, I learnt that the following would help keep my readings in check:
1) By reducing carbs like white rice or beehoon tremendously or not eating carbs at all. Even brown rice have to be cut to half a bowl.
2) By exercising like brisk walking for about 30 mins after every meal.
3) By restricting my intake of fruits (as fruits contain simple sugar) and replace it with more vegetables for fibre.

I need to officially record my readings again tomorrow. I hope the above pointers could work well.
